Mechanical Engineering Design

This is a 4 unit senior class delivering a comprehensive engineering design process which includes a group design project experience. The Mechanical Engineering Design class bridges between the fundamental knowledge (such as heat and mass transfer, control systems, mechanical systems, etc.) and any design project in our daily life in bringing in an integration of new perspective and in preparation for real applications.

You may reach out for further understanding of the topics or to create relevant projects. Contact Dr. Chien at

GRADUATE

Laboratory/Research supervisions

The laboratory supervision includes projects with masters students, doctoral students and visiting scholars.

LFA Journal Club

The LFA journal club is for enhancing research discussion for scholars or graduate students by allowing each student to explore research not only from their own subject, but also other fields. We select papers and conduct journal club discussion with researchers at different levels. We also invite other research professionals to join if they are interested.

Fabrication Training

Conducting research is the main goal but without the fundamental knowledge of how to use tools the research can suffer. Part of the engineering skills trainings listed in the following (Women fabrication training, DECADE) is adopted into the LFA research skill trainings for initiating the experimental or computational works.
An example of the training videos is attached on the right below – thermocouple welding. Please find more project training records on the LFA instagram.

DIVERSITY PROGRAMS

California Alliance for Minority Participation (CAMP); Multiple Roles

There are numerous activies that the CAMP (California Allicance for Minority Participation) office serves as an inclusive role at UCI campus.

I have served as a poster judge for undergraduate minorities in STEM research at the CAMP Statewide Symposium, as an invited guest speaker at the EXCEL (EXpanding Communities and Encouraging Leadership) program, as an undergraduate advisor for CAMP summer scholars, and joining the STEW (Science, Technology, Education Workgroup) starting in 2021 Fall.

Manufacturing Process in Engineering for Women Doctoral Researchers; Instructor

This special program was supported by Diverse Educational Community & Doctoral Experience (DECADE) from the UCI Office of Inclusion for women doctoral researchers to gain fundamental engineering process knowledge and skills to applying in their research freely. The course delivered multiple layers of hands-on training and incorporated with diverse fabrication professionals bringing a full spectrum of resources for researchers.

Pre-College Program; Guest Lecture

California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science (COSMOS) is a pecial summer school for excellent high school students to gain experience in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. The guest lecture was to allowing the pre-college student to understnad the importance of projects and teamwork.
